January 2016

Monday, 1 February 2016

Hello friends! So January has been a surprisingly exciting month for me. I wasn't looking forward to January back in 2015 because that was when my operation was supposed to be. However, my operation got pushed back two weeks and so Matt and I were left with a week off. So we decided to take an impromptu trip to Amsterdam! And it was amazing!

Amsterdam has always been a place I've wanted to visit. I was actually meant to live there in my second year of university but things didn't quite go to plan. So I was very excited to visit it. I loved it! Amsterdam is a beautiful city. I would've liked to have just wandered around the city but it was far too cold for me. As Amsterdam is the home of museums we visited a few that caught our eye including the Van Gogh museum, the Stedelijk Muesuem, the Huis Marseille Museum for Photography and the Nemo Science Center (which was seriously so cool but likely only meant for children). We chose not to visit the bigger touristy things like the Anne Frank house and the Riksmuseum, in part becuase we couldn't get them free on the IAmsterdam card but mainly because we just didn't feel like it. I think as a result we got a better feel for the city and I adored it. It's definitely a place I could live in.

As well as our trip to Amsterdam, we also saw Hozier in January. He was just amazing live! And I also got the chance to have a reunion with my university friends which was very fun! So all round a very good month!

Favourites

  • My first favourite this month was The Martian by Andy Weir. I haven't seen the film yet because I always like to read the book first. And oh my god, I loved it so much. I feel like such a little nerd. It's just made me want to read all about space, and planets and space travel! It's a very good book. It was surprisingly funny and just simply a well-written entertaining novel.
  • Amsterdam of course has to be in my favourites. I well and truly fell head over heels for the city. I definitely want to go back there again at some point. It's also really given me a bug for traveling.
Links I've Loved
  • A great post by Meghan Sara about couples on their phone. I am one of those people who does unfortunately two people who are on their phone together and this post put me in my place which is not a bad thing.
  • These next two posts are in the same ballpark. In "One day doesn't exist" Kirstin Macdonald discusses the importance of doing stuff now rather than relying on the myth of 'one day' whilst over on Ally In Blunderland, Ally has written possibly my favourite New Year post about assessing and evaluating our lives more often rather than just once a year. Both posts kind of give you that "yeah I'm gonna go out and kick life's butt" feeling!

Thanks for reading!
